29-30 September
As you know, I started this category with the idea of driving to Malta but circumstances have prevented me from fulfilling it so far. Yesterday Mick Cundy sent me a link http://www.maltairshow.com/ and that made me decide to aim for a September 2012 trip.
Will anyone else be in Malta at this time? I expect to arrive a week or so before but got some planning to do before that, route, where to stop, ferries etc.
Two stops will be Lake Maggiore where an old friend of mine lives and also Monte Cassino where my Father fought in WW2 (Blackwatch).
I'll refer back to the driving thread for the many tips and advice that people have given.
// EDIT NOTE // - I have another post in this thread requesting information of people that are/maybe going to attend the airshow. Please see below.
Cheers

Well, as we have discussed I plan to be there then, between 18th Sept and 2nd October. I hope to meet you at the air show at least and I am definately meeting up with Jim a few times.
Would loved to have made the airshow in Sep, however, me and Rose are booked to stay between 20 July and 6 August. Will be sharing the time between 'the outlaws' in Qrendi and sister-in-laws pad in Mellieha. May even look up an old chum for a few 'cheeky swallies'....

Nearer the time we'll have to arrange a date and place to meet up. Maybe an old haunt down Sliema way but it's a long time since I've been there so lots of places will have changed.
Good luck with it Dave, we may be there but we are off to Canada for a fortnight in August so the old readies may be in short supply. The last time I went to the airshow, the AFM open day on the Luqa domestic site was on the same weekend. There's no info on that that I could find yet, but worth looking out for. You can also drive onto the old No1 site for a look around as its an industrial estate now. The airshow is usually accessed from the crash gate on Triq Hal-Farrug, turn left at the roundabout down the hill from the No1 site.
I live at Qrendi, hope to see you.
Regards
Hello Gents,
As it happens, I'm the organiser of the Malta airshow and this year we will be celebrating 70 Years from the presentation of the George Cross Medal to the Maltese people so we are planning to have quite a good participation by RAF assets. With this in mind, we can discuss further closer to the Malta trip so I arrange for you all to have a VIP pass for the Saturday afternoon. I'm hoping to get the Canberra T4 towed from its present location to the show grounds for the weekend and your possible presence at the airshow gives me an added reason to have the jet in the vicinity. If the Canberra plan falls apart we can always find a way of having the small group visit the jet on the other side of the airfield.
Cheers
Joe
Hi Folks,
Would love to return to Malta for this and to visit my Mum & my extended family but I'm afraid funds will not allow it in 2012. Having been laid-off twice in 2011 and still looking for a new job you will all appreciate that the cost of flights to Malta via the UK precludes such a visit. Good luck with the event and I hope to meet up with a few members in 2013.
Cheers
Dave
Hi Joe and thanks for the generous offer. I hope to be able to take you up on that.
Hello Joe, thank you very much for that information and the offer of VIP tickets for the Saturday afternoon, very generous of you and very much appreciated.
I am planning to drive so I'd probably start off mid September. I'll confirm dates closer to the time.
In the UK I attend a number of airshows supporting the only remaining flying Avro Vulcan, not a very popular aircraft in Malta I know but it does thrill the crowds. It's 60 years since the first flight in 1952 so it, and Queen Elizabeth, are celebrating their diamond jubilees this year ! Due to flying restrictions, age and also a lot of equipment has been stripped out, it wouldn't be allowed to fly to Malta.
Yes Dave, the Vulcan is popular in Malta for the wrong reason. Having said that, I get a lot of Maltese asking me if I could get the Vulcan back to Malta but as you mentioned, it is practically impossible to bring her back to the Island for two main reasons - 1) is that it is not RVSM-approved, ie, it will have to fly not higher than 27000ft, and 2) that because of her having to fly so low it will have to do at least one stop on the way from the UK and the fuel cost for the transit flight is horrendous. I have spoken to Robert Pleming many times as we meet at a few conventions over the year and discussed this even when the Vulcan was still being prepared for her first flight.
Anyways, perhaps you can co-ordinate and lead the group visiting the Malta airshow and then I'll make the necessary arrangements from our end.
Yes, it would be great but totally impossible to see XH558 in Malta. She had a great season last year but a fuel leak in No. 2 tank and then a hydraulic failure meant she missed the 3 busiest weekends of the year!
I'll keep track of who is coming to the airshow in September and we can co-ordinate any gathering points etc.
If anyone else adds to this thread to let us know they will be able to attend the Airshow please send me an email or private message with the following information.
This is the text of an email I sent out on Thursday 02 February.
I am confirming that we have booked a trip from 18th Sept - 2nd Oct. We are looking forward to meeting anyone who is also there at the time.
Dave, I e-mailed you privately with specific details.
I have now booked flight from UK 26 September, Return flight from Luqa 03 October.
Staying at the Milano Due hotel in Sliema. booked through 'On the Beach'.
Just to say that if anyone is going to Malta this year at all then be quick and buy the Malta 1, 2, or 3 day passes on line at half price.
You can buy them 12 months in advance.
See link below, we have ours but you only have to 29th Feb. Save a small fortune if interested in visiting attractions (museums etc) or going on tours.

Don't forget also that a bus travel ticket system operates in Malta and one could buy tickets upfront either on a daily basis or three, five or seven day tickets. (Even cheaper if over 60, I think.)
One day travel ticket costs €3.49
Three day travel ticket costs €9.32
Five day travel ticket costs €11.65
Seven day travel ticket costs €13.98
Travel Tickets are NOT available on the Island of GOZO
See you there in September, if not before :-)
